Handmade pots feel different to use and handle because of the personal attention that goes into their making. You can often see traces of the makers hands and feel a connection not just to the maker but also to the material intelligence and care that the objects hold. Humans are social animals and feeling linked with others is important to most of us. Today, as we bear witness to so much inhumanity in the world, it is hard to take in. To me, the handmade object, with all its imperfections, is a reminder of the other side of being human, of the creativity and care that also defines us. Anita of Blue & Ochre mostly makes platters for sharing, bowls and plates – objects we have made and used for thousands of years, that accompany social gatherings of people from everywhere. Anita says “making keeps me connected to what is positive about humanity, and hopefully those who hold and use these bowls and plates feel a sense of that too”.
